Bakery flooring has unique equirements with differing surface textures and physical properties to be considered.
Our range of polyurethane resin screeds for bakery flooring are available with a smooth finish, a lightly textured finish and a medium-heavy textured finish.
The following descriptions and life expectancies have been produced by the Resin Flooring Association and are applicable to all member companies, both contractors and manufacturers. The life expectancy figures are based upon the experiences of its members and there are no doubt some who feel they are overly cautious (the salesmen) and some who feel they are ambitious (the lawyers) and some who feel they are about right - these figures therefore are very much a consensus and should be viewed as such.
Pumadur SL at 2-3mm in thickness is a medium to heavy duty floor finish with a smooth matt surface and an anticipated life expectancy of up to eight years.
Pumadur MD at 4-6mm in thickness is a heavy to very heavy duty floor finish with a smooth matt surface and an anticipated life expectancy of up to ten years.
Pumadur RT at 6-9mm in thickness is a very heavy duty floor finish with a light anti-slip surface and an anticipated life expectancy of up to twelve years.
Pumadur HF at 6-9mm in thickness is a very heavy duty floor finish with a medium to coarse anti-slip surface and an anticipated life expectancy of up to twelve years.
Pumadur bakery flooring has been verified as being 'non-tainting' by the independant body the Campden & Chorleywood Food Research Association using their test method TES-S-002.
There are a numerous considerations for bakery floors and Pumadur RT pretty well ticks most boxes - with its light anti-slip finish Pumadur RT is the floor finish that 'overlaps' into most areas and is the most versatile finish we offer for a bakery type environment.
Bakery Flooring - Oven Areas
Floors under and immediately around oven areas have to be resistant to reflective heat. At an applied thickness of 12mm seamless heavy duty polyurethane resin floor screeds can withstand temperatures up to 130oC and at 9mm up 120oC. This type of floor finish has either a light texture (Pumadur RT) or medium-heavy texture (Pumadur HF). Hot metal wheels straight out of the ovens may 'indent' such floors and pose a risk of debonding caused by thermal shock. Oven trolleys with metal wheels should be be allowed to sit on floor plates in order to cool down before being placed directly onto the floor. If the heat is in excess of 130oC other options such as tiles may have to be considered.
Bakery Flooring - Dry Process Areas and Storage Areas
Dry process areas in the bakery industry may require an anti slip floor finish - then again perhaps not! The choice is not always a simple yes or no. Flour, baking soda, granular sugar, yeast, icing sugar and other powdered dry components can be slippery underfoot.
It can be argued that accidental spillages cleaned up quickly do not present an ongoing slip hazard whereas similar spillages on a frequent basis, and therefore more easily anticipated, are less likely to be immediately removed and do present an ongoing or even constant slip hazard.
A smooth bakery floor is more easily cleaned. A textured anti-slip floor finish can also be cleaned but will require a more robust cleaning regime and it is critical that 'the peaks and troughs' of the floor are thoroughly cleaned.
At an applied thickness of 3-4mm Pumadur SL (medium duty) or 5-6mm Pumadur MD (heavy duty) self smoothing polyurethane resin bakery flooring will peform well in this environment but could prove to be a slip hazard.
At an applied thickness of 6-9mm seamless heavy duty polyurethane resin bakery flooring will perform well in these areas whilst providing either a light antislip texture (Pumadur RT) or medium-heavy duty antislip texture (Pumadur HF) and are capable of withstanding temperatures of up to 120oC - ideal if steam or boiling water cleaning is to be employed.
Bakery Flooring - Wet Process Areas
Wet process areas in bakeries should have an anti slip floor finish applied. Dry powder components spilled on the floor and subsequently subjected to water spillage are very slippery underfoot as is mixed dough that may have been dropped. For good measure add in the potential for oil, butter or fat droppings and spillages and we have a floor with high slip potential.
Bakery Flooring - Cold Room / Chiller
Cold rooms in bakeries do not generally pose a slip hazard and as such a smooth floor finish should suffice. At an applied thickness of 2-3mm Pumadur SL (medium duty) or 4-6mm Pumadur MD (heavy duty) self smoothing polyurethane resin floor screeds will peform well in this environment.
Bakery Flooring - Packing Areas
Packing Areas in the bakery industry generally do not pose a slip hazard and as such a smooth floor finish should suffice. At an applied thickness of 2-3mm Pumadur SL (medium duty) or 4-6mm Pumadur MD (heavy duty) self smoothing polyurethane resin floor screeds will peform well in this environment.
Bakery Flooring - Existing Tiled Floors
Issues can arise with existing broken or cracked tiles often exacerbated by breakdown of the grout between the tiles. In the case of the floor tiles, subject to them being solidly bonded, they can be mechanically prepared by captive grit blasting or diamond grinding and overlaid with the appropriate food-grade polyurethane resin screed.

Pumadur resin screeds are often referred to as 'food grade' or 'food safe' floor finishes and have been tested and verified as being 'non-tainting' by the independant body the Campden & Chorleywood Food Research Association using their test method TES-S-002.
Internal coved (rounded) skirtings are another feature to consider. When we install your new commercial kitchen floor we can continue the flooring right up the walls, typically about four inches. This is referred to as an internal coved or radius skirting and eliminates the right angled hard edge where the new floor meets the wall preventing the build up of dirt and making the whole floor much easier to clean.
Pumadur floor screeds can thoroughly cleaned and sanitised
Pumadur RT and Pumadur HF at 9mm thick can be cleaned with pressurised steam and/or boiling water
